Installing a new faucet is generally a highly satisfying, straightforward project—until you try to remove the old one. If your existing fixture has been sitting in place for years, you are likely dealing with corroded, frozen mounting nuts tucked way up in the darkest, most cramped corner of your vanity cabinet.

Navigating the tight quarters behind a sink basin can test anyone's patience. To help you get through it without a frantic call to a plumber, here is a field-ready, step-by-step field manual designed to help you tear down your old hardware safely and efficiently.

The Pre-Game Checklist

Before squeezing yourself into the vanity cabinet, make sure you have these tools within arm's reach.

Step 0: The Water Lockdown (Crucial First Step)

Never take a tool to a plumbing line without confirming the system is completely depressurized.

  1. Locate the two dedicated shutoff valves underneath the sink basin.

  2. Turn both knobs clockwise until they come to a hard stop.

  3. Open the faucet handles completely above the sink. This confirms the water is successfully cut off, drains the residual water inside the fixture body, and bleeds off line pressure.

Valve Troubleshooting Alert: If the old shutoff valves begin weeping or leaking from the handle stem when you turn them, use a wrench to give the hex packing nut directly behind the handle knob a small quarter-turn clockwise. Do not over-tighten it, or the handle will lock up completely. If water continues to dribble out of the spout even when the valves are cranked completely shut, you will need to turn off the main water supply valve to the house and plan to replace the faulty shutoff valves during this project.

Removing a Standard Top-Mount Faucet

By far the most common layout in modern homes, a top-mount (or deck-mount) faucet houses its main mechanical body above the countertop, secured by long threaded tailpieces passing downward through the sink holes.

 

 

 

1.Set the Catch Bucket:Prep the Spill Zone.

Position a small bucket or a thick roll of towels directly beneath the water shutoff connections to catch any dirty, stagnant water trapped in the riser lines.

2.Disconnect the Supply Tubes:Requires two pairs of pliers.

Lock one pair of channel pliers firmly onto the body of the shutoff valve to keep it perfectly stationary. Use your second pair of pliers to unthread the compression nut on the flexible supply line. Note: If you have ancient, rigid copper lines soldered straight to the valves, you will need to cut through the tubes cleanly using a dedicated tubing cutter or a compact hacksaw.

3.Loosen the Deep Mounting Nuts:Use a specialized basin wrench.

Reach your basin wrench up into the narrow gap behind the sink bowl. Flip the jaw of the wrench so it grips the large mounting nut holding the faucet tailpiece to the underside of the counter. Twist counter-clockwise (looking upward from the floor) to back the nut all the way off the threads. Repeat on the opposite side.

4.Slice the Seal and Extract:5 minutes.

Step out from under the sink. From above, gently rock and pull the faucet body straight up out of the mounting holes. If it refuses to budge, it is likely glued down by age; use a sharp utility knife to carefully slice through the perimeter bead of old silicone caulk or plumber's putty until the fixture pops free.

 

Removing an Old-School Bottom-Mount Faucet

If your home features a vintage or industrial basin faucet, the main brass valve body actually lives beneath the sink deck, pushing its individual valve stems and spout connections upward through the holes to be secured by nuts tightened from above.

1. Stripping the Top Hardware

With the water safely shut down and supply tubes disconnected underneath, stay above the sink to strip the exterior controls. Use a small screwdriver or a hex wrench to loosen the hidden set-screws holding the handles in place, then pull the handles off. Look for a hidden set-screw securing the central spout—this is often concealed beneath a decorative, thread-on escutcheon ring that must be lifted or spun out of the way first.

2. Backing Off the Top Nuts

Once the decorative elements are out of the way, you will see the bare mounting nuts holding the lower body to the upper deck surface. Use your channel-type pliers to grip these nuts firmly from above, unthreading them completely from the handle and spout positions.

3. Dropping the Body

Lay a thick towel across the floor of your vanity cabinet to act as a landing pad. Back under the sink, pull the heavy brass faucet body downward out of the sink holes. If it doesn't fall naturally once the top nuts are clear, give the lower pipe manifold a gentle tug to free it from decades of grime.

Pro Hacks for Defeating Frozen Hardware

If you find yourself stuck under the sink wrestling with a nut that refuses to turn, do not try to force it with brute arm strength alone—you risk cracking the porcelain sink or snapping the copper plumbing lines inside the wall. Instead, deploy these field-tested tactics:

  • Create Working Elbow Room: If the plastic drain pipes or the curved P-trap block your wrench's swing radius, do not hesitate to loosen the slip-nuts and remove the drain trap entirely. Just keep a bucket underneath to catch the trap water.

  • Chemical Penetration: Spray a generous coat of specialized penetrating oil directly onto the stubborn threads. Let it sit undisturbed for ten to fifteen minutes to creep into the rusted grooves before attempting to turn it again.

  • The Nuclear Option: If the metal loops are completely stripped or rounded off, skip the wrenches entirely. Squeeze a compact hacksaw blade up into the gap or use a dedicated, mechanical nut-splitter tool to physically crack the nut away from the brass tailpiece.
